InSnap for developers
A bug report gets fixed faster when the screenshot shows the steps, not just the symptom. InSnap keeps capture, annotation, OCR, long screenshots, recording and reproducible steps in one hotkey.
Developers take screenshots all day: a failing test, a UI regression, an API response, a step in an onboarding doc. InSnap is built around the moment after capture: mark the exact control, copy the error, stitch the log, record the reproduction and write the steps down.
What you can do
- Capture a region, window or UI element with one hotkey.
- Number the steps, draw an arrow at the exact control and redact tokens before sharing.
- Box an error message and copy the text with local OCR; recognition does not upload the image.
- Stitch a long stack trace or log into one scrolling screenshot.
- Pin an API response or design spec above the editor while you code.
- Record the reproduction once and turn each click into a guide step.
A bug report workflow
- Capture the broken state and annotate the control that failed.
- Use a scrolling screenshot for the full stack trace.
- Redact tokens, customer data and internal host names with a solid cover or strong mosaic.
- Attach the environment, expected/actual and a short recording.
- If the fix needs a handoff, record the reproduction and export a guide with numbered steps.
Why local matters
OCR and smart erase run on your computer. Screenshots and recordings stay local unless you choose to share them through the optional Cloud subscription. That matters when the screenshot contains a token, a customer record or an internal URL.
Honest limits
- No Linux build: macOS 14.4+ and Windows 10+ only.
- OCR is good for Chinese, English and Latin-script languages; Japanese kana, Korean and Russian are not reliable.
- Smart erase is a local algorithm, not a generative model; it works best on flat, gradient and UI backgrounds.
FAQ
Can I copy text from a screenshot?
Yes. Box the text, run OCR, then select characters or lines directly on the image and copy. OCR runs locally.
Can I capture a long stack trace?
Yes. Scrolling capture stitches the page or log into one image. It is part of Pro.
Does InSnap work on Linux?
No. macOS 14.4+ and Windows 10+ only.
