InSnap vs Snagit
Snagit is built around reusable output: capture, annotate, drop into a template and keep a library. InSnap covers the daily capture, annotate, record and guide loop on Mac and Windows without a subscription.
If templates are central to your documentation work, Snagit is a fair choice. If you mostly capture, annotate and record, and want one license across Mac and Windows, InSnap covers that with a free core and a one-time Pro purchase.

When to choose Snagit
- Reusable templates are central to how your team produces documentation.
- You want TechSmith's library and the rest of its product line.
- A subscription managed by the company suits your purchasing process.
When to choose InSnap
- You mostly capture, annotate, copy, save, pin and record, and want a free tier for that.
- You want one Pro license for up to three devices across macOS and Windows, with updates included.
- You want to turn a recorded task into a step guide, with one-click blurring across every step.
Honest limits
- InSnap does not replicate Snagit's template library.
- OCR is reliable for Latin-script languages and Chinese, not for Japanese kana, Korean or Russian.
- There is no Linux build.

Is InSnap a drop-in replacement for Snagit?
Not exactly. It covers capture, annotation, OCR, recording and step guides on Mac and Windows, but it does not replicate Snagit's template library. If templates are central to your workflow, keep Snagit.
Does one InSnap license work on both Mac and Windows?
Yes. A Pro license covers up to three devices, and they can be a mix of macOS 14.4+ and Windows 10+ machines.
Can InSnap capture a scrolling page?
Yes, through long screenshot mode, a Pro feature. You select the area, scroll the page yourself, and InSnap stitches the frames into one image.
Do I need an account or subscription?
No account is needed for the free tools, and Pro activates with a license code bound to the device. Cloud is an optional subscription.
