How to Change InSnap's Language and Theme

Eleven interface languages, three appearance modes and a scroll direction setting. How to switch them, what follows the system, and what changes immediately.

InSnap ships in eleven languages and follows the system appearance by default. Both can be changed from Settings › General, under Appearance & language, and both apply without restarting the app.

The appearance setting

The Appearance dropdown has three choices:

  • Follow system — use the same light or dark mode as macOS or Windows.
  • Light — always use the light theme, even when the system is dark.
  • Dark — always use the dark theme.

Changes apply to open windows immediately: the settings window, the capture toolbar, the image editor and the guide editor all switch together. The capture overlay is created fresh for each screenshot, so it uses the new theme on the next capture.

If you switch themes to match a screenshot you are about to take, switch before pressing the capture hotkey. The theme affects the app's own windows, not the content you are capturing.

The Appearance and Language rows

The language setting

The Language dropdown lists:

  • Follow system — pick the first language in the system's preferred-language list that InSnap supports.
  • The eleven explicit languages: English, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, Japanese, Korean, German, French, Spanish, Brazilian Portuguese, Russian and Italian.

With Follow system, a Chinese system with Traditional Chinese as the preferred script resolves to Traditional Chinese; a Portuguese system resolves to Brazilian Portuguese. A language InSnap does not support falls back to English.

An explicit language is stored and survives restarts, so the next launch starts in that language instead of asking the system again. Follow system keeps tracking the system preference.

The Language row

What changes immediately

Language and appearance are applied at runtime:

  • The settings window is rebuilt in the new language, keeping the current page.
  • The tray or menu bar menu is rebuilt.
  • The next capture overlay uses the new language and theme.
  • Existing screenshots and saved images are not touched; the language is an interface setting, not an image setting.

A few things stay outside the app's translation: the macOS or Windows system menus, file dialogs provided by the system, and text inside the screenshots themselves. That is expected; the app does not translate other applications or the content of your images.

Why Follow system is the right default

Following the system keeps the app consistent with everything else on the machine: menu bar, notifications, permission dialogs. It also handles language changes automatically when you travel or switch your system language for a project.

Choose an explicit language only when:

  • You are writing documentation and need the interface to match the article's language.
  • The system language is not the language you want for this app.
  • You are testing translations and need a fixed interface.

Scroll direction and other appearance details

The same section includes Scroll zoom direction, which controls whether scrolling up makes things bigger or smaller across the app: stroke width, font size, magnifier zoom, history zoom and timeline zoom. It is physical-direction based, so it stays consistent across macOS and Windows.

If scrolling feels inverted after switching machines, change it here rather than adjusting every tool separately.

FAQ

Do I need to restart InSnap after changing the language?

No. The settings window and the next capture overlay use the new language immediately. The system-provided menus and dialogs remain in the system language.

Which languages does InSnap support?

Eleven interface languages: English, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, Japanese, Korean, German, French, Spanish, Brazilian Portuguese, Russian and Italian. Follow system picks the first supported language from the system list.

Does changing the theme affect my screenshots?

No. The theme changes InSnap's own windows and toolbars. Screenshots capture whatever is on screen, including other apps and your desktop, in their own appearance.

Your next screenshot is one hotkey away.
